As a chronic insomniac, I’m either the best or the worst person to review sleep solutions. I don’t have a hard time falling asleep, but I have a very hard time quieting my mind in the middle of the night, thanks a new business (even a wellness-focused one like Well Defined), worries about COVID-19, two kids who often make middle-of-the-night appearances in my bedroom, and obscure thoughts like the lyrics to my favorite song from 1998. From the ridiculous to the serious, nighttime appears to be the right time for my mind to run wild. As such, my eyes tend to pop open around 3 am, and I often stay awake for anywhere between 30 minutes and three hours, which makes my 6 am wakeup time somewhat dreadful on certain days. I’ve also been told by my husband that I’m a notoriously light snoozer who is awakened at the slightest rustle of a sheet, which apparently makes me quite a joy to sleep with and further adds to my sleep dysfunction.

Turns out, I’m not alone in my struggles with sleep. A recent report claims that nearly 51 percent of adults worldwide don’t catch enough ZZZs—the ideal amount is seven to eight hours a night. The side effects of this sleep detriment can be pretty dire and include unhappiness, depression, low sex drive, lack of energy, weight gain, memory loss, and general negativity.

When I decided to tackle a review of cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), cannabigerol (CBG) products and their effect on sleep, I was a little dubious about anything changing my terrible sleep patterns but excited about the prospect of making a change. I also am a firm believer in the benefits of cannabinoids, so I’m pleased to report that all of these products made an impact—I found myself falling asleep more easily, having fewer middle-of-the-night wakeups, and even when I did wake up, I found that I fell back to sleep pretty quickly. Even better, my sleep has improved without resorting to pharmaceuticals, which is an intervention I’m keen to avoid and one of the many benefits of making the move to plant-based healing.

For those of you who aren’t quite familiar with the lingo, here the scoop: CBD, CBG, and CBN are all cannabinoids, non-hallucinogenic compounds that are part of the cannabis plant that provide a range of healing and medicinal benefits. When it comes to sleep, CBD has been found to relieve anxiety and stress and induce calm; CBN has sedative effects; and CBG helps increase dopamine levels to support sleep and reduce anxiety. When used alone, together, or with other snooze-inducing ingredients, these cannabinoids can help you achieve a good night’s rest.

Whether you are ready to sample these products for yourself or make them a retail option for clients who are chasing the sandman, there are a lot of great reasons to give sleep-focused CBD, CBN, and CBG products a try. Consistent and healthy shut-eye can boost immunity, strengthen your heart, prevent weight gain, increase productivity, and generally make you a happier, healthier human being, all of which sounds like a dream!

Anzie Blue Blackberry Tincture ($140 for 1,000 mg CBD, $165 for 1,500 mg CBD)

Bottle of Anzie Blue CBD
What We Love
  • Delicious taste
  • Accurate dosing due to marked dropper
  • 1,000 and 1,500 mg options to appeal to different needs
Ingredients of Note
  • Hemp-derived CBD (1,000 or 1,500 mg per bottle)
  • Coconut (MCT) oil
  • Terpenes
  • Natural blackberry flavor

Anzie Blue is a coffee, wellness, and CBD shop in Nashville whose founders combined their marketing and formulation experience to successfully add their own line of CBD products to their retail offerings. They clearly know what they are doing, because the 1,000 mg tincture that I sampled was wildly effective in creating calm and reducing stress and anxiety. Although this isn’t a targeted sleep product, I found that taking it in the afternoon made my evenings significantly more relaxed and my nights prone to better sleep. I also love the blackberry taste.

Bottle of Bloom Farms CBN/CBD
What We Love
  • Potent formula made with a five-to-one ratio of full-spectrum CBD hemp extract and CBN isolate
  • Tincture is extremely effective in ensuring a full night of sleep
  • Bloom Farms only uses organically grown hemp, and the formulation is gluten-free, kosher-certified, and non-GMO
Ingredients of Note
  • 200 mg of CBN and 1,000 mg of CBD per bottle
  • Organic MCT (Coconut) oil
  • Organic whole-plant hemp extract

This particular blend was the most effective in keeping me asleep through the night among all of the products I reviewed. I credit the combo of full-spectrum CBD oil and pure CBN, which is known for its relaxing and sedating effect. I definitely give it two thumbs up in terms of helping me sleep. Word of caution: it has a fairly strong taste. Bloom Farms says the earthy, distinct, unfiltered flavor is the mark of an exceptional cannabinoid tincture. But be prepared, while some tinctures have more palatable flavors, this one has a bit of a bite.

Dr. Kerklaan
What We Love
  • Enticing fragrance
  • Thoughtful blend of soothing ingredients
  • Non-greasy feel and easy absorption
  • Ideal addition to a pre-bedtime meditation or stretching session
Ingredients of Note
  • Full-spectrum CBD extract (120 mg per bottle)
  • Melatonin
  • Mandarin, verbena, and lavender oils
  • Water
  • Shea butter
  • Sunflower seed oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Sweet almond oil

This topical product was perfect for creating a ritual that encourages relaxation and better rest. While CBD and melatonin directly encourage the body to drift into slumber mode, the subtle fragrant blend of mandarin, lavender, and verbena engaged my sense of smell, which further helped me relax. The cream is intended to be massaged into the temples and forehead, but I also rubbed it onto my neck and shoulders, where I hold most of my tension, about 20 minutes before going to sleep. It definitely put me in a more serene state of mind.

Bottle of Kamu Dream CBD
What We Love
  • Along with CBD, the blend of other soothing ingredients like melatonin, lavandin, and poppy contributed to a better night’s sleep
  • Liposomal technology to encourage quick, effective absorption
  • Appealing flavor
  • Vegan, non-GMO, and organic ingredients
Ingredients of Note
  • Full-spectrum CBD (300 mg per bottle)
  • Melatonin
  • CA poppy
  • Lavandin
  • Adaptogens, including reishi mushroom, skullcap, and ashwaganda root

My favorite thing about this tincture is the creative blend of ingredients that work together. While CBD is the star, the supporting actors are also pretty powerful. Melatonin is known for improving sleep, poppy helps alleviate insomnia, and lavandin promotes calm and relaxation. Incorporating popular adaptogens, like reishi mushroom, skullcap, and ashwaganda root, known for improving sleep, lessening fatigue, and reducing anxiety and stress, add the perfect accent to an already powerful blend.

Ott CBD Coffee Relaxation Series ($45 for 12 ounces of ground or whole bean coffee)
Package of Ott CBD Coffee
What We Love
  • Caffeine free
  • Medium blend with notes of caramel, chocolate, and fruit
  • Austin, TX, origin story of combining the benefits of CBD and coffee to focus attention and calm anxiety
  • A portion of proceeds supports the local homeless population
Ingredients of Note
  • Full-spectrum CBD (195 mg per bag)
  • CBG
  • CBN
  • Coffee beans from Cauca, Colombia

When I first heard of CBD coffee, I kind of scratched my head, as those don’t really seem like ingredients that go together. However, after reading about how the brand was founded by someone who loved coffee but hated the jitters, the match made perfect sense. I’m generally not a big coffee drinker, and I rarely drink it in the evening unless I’m trying to stay awake, so I was a little nervous to tip back a cup right before bed. But the blend was quite tasty, and instead of waking me up, I felt warm, relaxed, and ready for a good night of sleep. While I’m not sure it contained enough CBD to keep me asleep all night, it definitely put me in a serene state and made bedtime a breeze. I would definitely recommend adding this drink to an evening wind-down ritual as an excellent way to encourage calm and relaxation before bed.

Bottle of Reset CBN next to a glass of berries
What We Love
  • CBN has been encapsulated into nanoparticles for faster absorption of four times more CBN
  • Water base avoids the oily taste of some tinctures
  • Appealing blueberry flavor
  • Accurate dosing thanks to dropper being demarcated with a 10 mg serving size
  • Ingredients are soy and gluten free as well as non-GMO
Ingredients of Note
  • Double-tested CBN isolate (300 mg per bottle)
  • Purified water
  • Phosphatidylcholine
  • Capric/caprylic triglycerides
  • Vitamin E
  • Monk fruit

After testing a number of products, I’m pretty sure that CBN is the ingredient that works best with my endocannabinoid system, so it’s not surprising that this was quite effective at keeping me asleep. I also preferred the water-based texture to some of the oil-based products I tried. While this was a texture preference for me, according to the company, using water-based products is more effective because the body is also water-based, so that was a double benefit. Ditto on the encapsulated nanoparticles, which also make for more effective absorption
