New statistics from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the world’s largest association of facial plastic surgeons, offered the first professional glimpse at how the pandemic continues to impact the aesthetic industry. As the first association to quantify the Zoom boom while also igniting the conversation of an uptick in facial plastic surgery, this new data offers a small glimmer of hope that life is rebounding to normal.

A full 70 percent of facial plastic surgeon members saw an increase in bookings and treatments over the course of the pandemic. But compared to past AAFPRS annual statistics, which highlight the popularity of non-invasive procedures, surgical procedures were in demand last year and are currently on the rise.

AAFPRS members illustrate the higher patient volume over the course of the pandemic:

  • 96 percent indicate patients have more time and flexibility to recover
  • 64 percent believe patients have more disposable income due to decreased spending in other areas
  • 40 percent agree that patients have increased interest in eye procedures; eyes are the only attribute that can be seen while masked
  • 39 percent believe patients are more interested in facelifts and neck lifts and other neck procedures than ever before

“Our members are seeing increases in surgical procedures including rhinoplasty, facelifts, eye lifts, neck lifts, and neck treatments over the course of the pandemic, likely due to more time spent on digital devices and an unprecedented virtual lifestyle, aka the Zoom boom,” says facial plastic surgeon and AAFPRS president Paul J. Carniol, M.D. “While women continue to be our likely patients, we are seeing more men than ever before come in for consultations and treatments, both surgical and non-surgical, to address signs of aging.”
