A delicious libation to help quell symptoms of adrenal fatigue comes from board-certified internist and medical mixologist Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., who has treated patients with low energy, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia for more than 40 years.
“Salt restriction is a terrible idea if you have adrenal exhaustion,” says Teitelbaum. “Salt supports the adrenals, which are the ‘stress handlers’ in the body. How do you know if you’ve got adrenal fatigue? Symptoms include intense irritability when hungry, low blood pressure, and a tendency to collapse physically, mentally, and emotionally when you’re under too much stress.”
“My virgin Bloody Mary is a quick fix that’s easy to make using tomato juice or V-8 and a splash of olive juice. For an extra boost, line the rim of the glass with salt,” he adds.
Here’s his tasty Rx:
- 1 lemon wedge
- Sea salt
- 1/2 cup tomato juice
- 1 Tbsp. olive juice
- 2 tsp. lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp. prepared horseradish
- 1/4 tsp. hot sauce
- 1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 celery stalk
Run a lemon wedge around the rim of a glass, then coat in sea salt. Add ice to the glass, then set aside. Add tomato juice, olive juice, lemon juice, horseradish, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce to a blender; mix until smooth. Pour and garnish with celery, if desired, then enjoy.
“Although increasing salt and water intake can be a tasty start, numerous other nutritional and lifestyle changes are especially important,” says Teitelbaum. “You don’t have to lose your relationships to irritability from being ‘Hangry.’”
