Despite the politicization of masks, the importance of wearing one to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has been pretty well established by the scientific community. However, disposable masks do pose a setback of sorts to the movement to ban single-use disposable items for the sake of the environment. In fact, many environmental activists and everyday consumers are concerned about the pollution being caused by disposable masks, gloves, and other personal protective equipment (PPE). In France, Frederic Munsch, an independent videographer, and Edmund Platt, founder of 1 Piece of Rubbish a Day, embarked on a journey to call attention to the problem. The two spent a month walking across France to pick up waste and the disposable masks that have multiplied since the start of the pandemic. I, too, have lost count of the number of discarded masks I’ve come across on the walking paths in my local park. Concerned about the environmental impact of these disposable masks, I’ve spent the better part of the pandemic looking for the ideal reusable mask. I’m fortunate in that I really only need to don a mask on my daily walk in the park and on the occasional trip to the grocery store. For others who work outside the home or in close proximity to others, such as estheticians, fitness pros, and therapists, a comfortable and effective mask is even more important. Here are some options that can help keep you and the people around you safe.

What We Love
  • Adjustable ear loops
  • Three protective layers
  • Silver ion-infused technology

Available in Black and Light Grey, this three-layer mask is thicker than most. With the inner and outer layer made of a cotton and poly blend and the middle layer infused with a silver ion mesh, this face mask features adjustable ear loops, which help provide a snugger fit. Because the fabric is a heavier, quilt-like material, I found it to be more comfortable to wear in cooler conditions.

For the Feel All Day Face Mask ($35 for a two-pack)

What We Love
  • Breathable fabric
  • Sustainable packaging
  • Zero toxic chemicals
  • Made in the USA

Part of the appeal of For the Feel’s All Day Face Mask is the company’s mission to make essential products with clean, sustainable, and premium materials. It partnered with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, to develop the ultra-comfortable mask. The reusable, non-toxic face mask is made of 100 percent certified organic dyes that are free of skin irritants and cancer-causing chemicals and are safe for the environment. The plant-based fabric is double layered, and the mask features soft ear loops that can be adjusted for a perfect fit. Available in black, the mask comes in a 2-, 4-, or 8-pack. Although it may seem almost too soft and comfy to be safe, I was impressed by the fact that it withstood the candle test (note: not a foolproof test) in which you try to blow out a flame to indicate the effectiveness of the barrier. I wasn’t able to extinguish the flame, which isn’t surprising considering the mask has a 94 percent PFE, or particle filtration efficiency.

What We Love
  • Adjustable soft-metal nose band
  • Fabric pocket for medical-grade filter
  • Uplifting message
  • Name label on the inside to help identify owner

This form-fitting machine-washable mask is made with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 fabric, which is certified free of harmful substances. It features an adjustable wrap-around head strap designed to avoid ear irritation. Although I typically prefer ear loops, I found the head strap to be more effective in keeping this mask in position. The breathable fabric is lightweight, quick drying, and minimizes any voice muffling. Available in black, white, charcoal, and blue, the mask comes in a 3-, 10-, or 50-pack. The mask provides comfortable coverage that looks professional in any situation. I find myself grabbing for mine whenever I want added protection, as the contoured fit truly feels like a reliable safeguard.

Soliscia By Nufabrx - $29.99
What We Love
  • Made in the USA
  • Infused with shea butter to hydrate skin and copper to fight microbes
  • Removable nose clip

This one-size-fits-all double-layered mask is infused with copper for its antimicrobial properties and shea butter to help moisturize the skin. While it may not look as fashion-forward as some other masks, it is comfy thanks to its soft ear loops and stretchy fabric. The shea butter is effective for at least 20 washes. Nufabrx is a proprietary biomaterial platform that embeds active ingredients that respond to the body for long-lasting dermal release. This mask combats irritation and maskne while also nourishing the skin with shea butter.

Mamask Sports ($21.99 for a 2-pack)

What We Love
  • Breathable copper-infused fabric
  • Comfortable even during intense workouts
  • Mothers make up more than 70 percent of the workforce, and nearly half of the company’s employees are disabled.

Finding a mask that serves double duty for everyday activities and working out can be a challenge. This sports mask fits the bill. Made of neoprene, which is ideal in all-weather conditions, it also features an inner lining composed of a state-of-the-art textile solution that combines copper ion fiber with polyester for antimicrobial, deodorizing, and cooling benefits. Available in medium and large sizes, it comes in a range of colors.

What We Love
  • Playful tropical prints
  • Antimicrobial Silverplus ion technology
  • Three protective layers

Tested at Nelson Labs in Salt Lake City, this three-layer mask was found to be 77 percent effect, which is at the top end of protection provided by fabric face masks. (Surgical masks start at around 70 percent.) To prevent odor buildup, it is treated with antimicrobial Silverplus ion technology. Although I loved the style of this mask with comfortable center stitching and wire to shape the nose, I did wish it was a bit snugger. Even the smallest size felt a bit loose on my face. However, someone else, with a less narrow face, would probably find it to be the perfect fit. It comes in S/M and L/XL and is available in three prints: Pink Hawaiian Floral, Sunset by the Coast, and Ocean Waves.

Sposh 3-Layer Premium Earloop Face Mask – ($37.50 for a 5-pack)

JL735-1
What We Love
  • Water-repellent outer layer
  • Three protective layers
  • Treated with antibacterial protection

Because our faces are different shapes and sizes, it can be challenging to find a mask that feels as if it was made for you. This three-layer mask fit like a dream, and the inner layer, made of interlock 100 percent polyester and treated with silver technology to prevent up to 99.9 percent of odor-causing bacteria, feels soft and cool to the skin. It even offers wicking protection to allow for the absorption of sweat. The water-repellent outer layer prevents the absorption of water droplets and particles, which helps prevent the contraction of viruses. Available in S/M and M/L sizes, it comes in Navy, Ivory, Black, Leaf Green, Dove Grey, and Spa Blue. The company also offers Refresh Mask and Linen Spray, which features an energizing blend of eucalyptus and cedar to keep your mask smelling fresh.

What We Love
  • A host of print fabrics from which to choose
  • Mask can be made to be reversible
  • Customizable with option to add a monogram
  • Made in the USA

This mask was too big for me, but it was perfect for my boyfriend who promptly claimed it as his own. As someone who struggles to find a comfortable mask that doesn’t hurt his ears, he found this mask to be his new go-to. Masks are available in two sizes: Small and Regular. Relying on quality fabrics from various mills, Tailor Made Face Masks are made in the U.S. The patterns are available in limited quantities, as the company makes use of leftover fabrics. Offering customization with any available fabric or request for a specific pattern, color, or material, the company also provides the option to monogram each mask. Recently, the company debuted its Exotica Collection, which includes 12 exotic animal-embossed leather-like vinyls and fabric patterns.
