Despite the politicization of masks, the importance of wearing one to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has been pretty well established by the scientific community. However, disposable masks do pose a setback of sorts to the movement to ban single-use disposable items for the sake of the environment. In fact, many environmental activists and everyday consumers are concerned about the pollution being caused by disposable masks, gloves, and other personal protective equipment (PPE). In France, Frederic Munsch, an independent videographer, and Edmund Platt, founder of 1 Piece of Rubbish a Day, embarked on a journey to call attention to the problem. The two spent a month walking across France to pick up waste and the disposable masks that have multiplied since the start of the pandemic. I, too, have lost count of the number of discarded masks I’ve come across on the walking paths in my local park. Concerned about the environmental impact of these disposable masks, I’ve spent the better part of the pandemic looking for the ideal reusable mask. I’m fortunate in that I really only need to don a mask on my daily walk in the park and on the occasional trip to the grocery store. For others who work outside the home or in close proximity to others, such as estheticians, fitness pros, and therapists, a comfortable and effective mask is even more important. Here are some options that can help keep you and the people around you safe.
