As a teenager, I was convinced I had oily skin due to congestion on my t-zone and hormonal breakouts on my nose and chin. As such and with zero skincare knowledge at my disposal, I slathered the cheapest, bright blue—and likely most destructive—grocery store astringent all over my face to solve the problem. I know all you esthies out there will be simply SHOCKED to learn that it didn’t work and, in fact, made my skin dry, scaly, tight, and totally uncomfortable.

All jokes aside, it took me well into my adult years to realize I had combination skin that tends toward dehydration and even a couple more years to realize that face oils—the complete opposite of drying astringents—are my ultimate skin saviors. I find them to be the perfect solution for pretty much anything that ails me, skincare-wise, and I love using oils at night under thicker creams and in the day under lighter moisturizers, sunscreen, and makeup to provide a smooth, hydrating base. Even larger pores, which I mistook for blackheads for years, look better when treated with face oils as a part of a more skin-type-appropriate skincare regimen. In fact, over the years, I’ve become quite the face-oil connoisseur, so I’m excited to share some of my favorites here.

No matter your skin type or concern, there is something for everyone among these 12 facial-oil selections.

Codex Beauty Labs Bia Nourishing Facial Oil ($90)
What We Love
  • Light texture
  • Quick absorption
Ingredients of Note
  • Rosehip oil
  • Bog myrtle
  • Sea buckthorn
  • Prickly pear seed oil
  • Serrated wrack seaweed
  • Rosemary
  • Kiwi seed oil
  • Baobab oil

While I always love a super-rich face oil, I also find that sometimes, depending on the time of year and the changing needs of my skin, one that is a bit lighter and absorbs quickly is more effective for me. As the weather heats up, and my skin is naturally oilier, this, light, dry oil is a perfect solution. Thanks to the combo of emollient and occlusive oils, this fast-absorbing formula is still ultra-hydrating without leaving a heavy residue.

Color Up REMEDY Treatment Oil ($37)
What We Love
  • Anti-inflammatory properties of CBD and rose essential oil helps reduce redness
  • Macadamia nut oil helps retain moisture and leaves skin with a supple texture
  • Organic, cruelty free, and free of parabens, phthalates, and sulphates
Ingredients of Note
  • Hemp CBD
  • Rosehip oil
  • Macadamia nut oil
  • Rose essential oil

I’m a big fan of CBD in skincare, and I also appreciate Color Up’s thoughtful approach to formulation and the company’s focus on training, so I was excited to try this oil. I was not disappointed. While it didn’t necessarily have the same floral and fruit fragrances as some of the other oils due to the naturally earthy scent of CBD, it packed a powerful treatment punch. An ideal soother for dry skin, the luxurious blend of ingredients worked well together to smooth, brighten, and restore my skin.

Elevé Cosmetics Organic Golden Beauty Oil ($95)
What We Love
  • Targeted formula that nourishes and supports collagen production for firming and boosting skin elasticity
  • Made with 15 organic, wildcrafted ingredients
  • Non-toxic, organic, vegan-based, and cruelty free
Ingredients of Note
  • Jojoba seed oil
  • Sunflower seed oil
  • Pear seed oil
  • Abyssinian oil
  • White tea, green tea, and rooibos extract
  • Passionflower, pomegranate, lupin seed, kakadu plum, and black currant extract
  • Olive squalane

Elevé was created by two Austin, TX-based sisters who are committed to creating clean beauty products that help enhance natural beauty. This oil, the brand’s best-selling product, does this with a unique combination of 15 active botanical oils and extracts. Along with being nourishing, the oil is also ideal for stimulating collagen production, so it also helps create firmer, tighter skin. A true multi-correctional product, it’s great for all skin types and ages.

Eminence Organic Skin Care Facial Recovery Oil ($76)
What We Love
  • Excellent for healing damaged and dehydrated skin
  • Made with biodynamic ingredients from Demeter International Certified biodynamic farms.
  • Vegan and free of soy, nuts, and gluten
Ingredients of Note
  • Clary sage oil
  • Olive oil
  • Sage leaf extract
  • Ylang ylang

This award-winning oil has a light texture and absorbs quickly. It’s also got two specific ingredients, clary sage oil and ylang ylang, that calm. I always trust Eminence for its clean, safe ingredients, so I even used this one to help heal a scar on my son’s upper lip. After just a couple weeks of use, his scar is significantly lighter, so I can vouch for its healing power. As for my own use, it deeply hydrates and makes my skin look healthier and refreshed.

What We Love
  • Unique main (and only) ingredient—plum seed oil
  • Ideal for all skin types, including acne-prone, sensitive, and allergy-prone skin
  • Natural UV sunscreen booster
  • Skin brightening properties
  • No essential oils, parabens, sulfates, preservatives, fragrance, or chemicals
Ingredients of Note
  • Organic Plum Seed Oil

I first discovered this beauty oil as the brand was launching a few years ago at an Indie Beauty Expo. I loved the story of three sisters banding together to honor their family’s multi-generational, sustainable, organic plum farming heritage while also discovering the powerful beauty benefits of this super fruit. The result is a gorgeous, antioxidant-rich face oil that heals, nourishes, and hydrates using oil culled from the seeds of a blend of proprietary plum varietals. I was an immediate fan, and it quickly became one of my favorite face oils. I love its light texture, quick absorption, and immediate brightening results. Fast forward to today, and I’m clearly not alone. This oil is consistently sold out and has garnered the attention of celebrity influencers like Chrissy Teigen, further cementing the success of this sweet, sustainable brand.

MIG Blackberry Leaf Serum ($79)
What We Love
  • Colorado origins and ingredients
  • Smooth, non-greasy texture
  • Fabulous fragrance
  • Vegan, gluten, and cruelty free
Ingredients of Note
  • Pumpkin seed oil
  • Rosehip seed oil
  • Raspberry leaf
  • Calendula flower extract
  • Meadowfoam seed oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Camellia oleifera seed oil
  • Pomegranate seed oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Sea Buckthorn fruit Oil
  • Blackberry Leaf Oil
  • Ashwagandha root extract
  • Nettle leaf oil

I love Colorado, but whenever I visit, the elevation completely dehydrates my skin. So, when I learned the MIG products are handcrafted in Colorado using local herbs, I figured, who better to tackle dry skin than experts who live there and know what works? Turns out, they know what they are talking about. I really liked the texture of this oil, which didn’t leave my skin feeling greasy and was created to balance skintone, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and soften and smooth skin. The botanicals, which are sourced from farms in France, blend perfectly with the herbs to create a truly compelling scent and a nourishing treatment.

Olive+M Renew + Repair Face Oil ($28)
What We Love
  • Velvety texture and fresh scent
  • Lightweight formula
  • Non-toxic, organic, cruelty free, and vegan-based ingredients
Ingredients of Note
  • Olive oil
  • Pomegranate seed oil
  • Rosehip oil
  • Red raspberry seed oil

This face oil, designed to renew and repair, has a soft, velvety texture that provides moisture and absorbs easily into the skin without feeling greasy. Less floral than some of the other oils, it has more of a green, woodsy aroma. I also like the use of olive oil for its antimicrobial, repairing, and renewing properties, while the other oils in the formulation are ideal for treating inflammation, reducing the effects of free radicals, nourishing the skin, and encouraging cell turnover and collagen production.

Pai The Light Fantastic ($74)
What We Love
  • Fragrance free
  • Accredited by the Soil Association, ensuring certified organic products are truly organic
  • Cruelty free
  • Vegan
Ingredients of Note
  • Schisandra plant extract
  • Cocoa
  • Ceramide Complex
  • Sunflower oil
  • Kukui oil

Packed with organic and vegan ingredients to care for skin in crisis, this soothing oil contains schisandra plant extract to reduce the visible signs of irritation, cocoa to de-stress skin, and the company’s Ceramide Complex, rich in omegas 3, 6, and 9, to protect the skin’s barrier. The lightweight texture calmed, soothed, and strengthened my sensitive skin, leaving it plumped and nourished. Fast absorbing, it’s ideal for reactive and irritated skin. I especially love that it works to rebuild the skin’s moisture barrier, leaving skin soft and hydrated.  (Reviewed by Heather Mikesell)

Pevonia De-Stress Escape Aromatic Oil ($49.50)
What We Love
  • Heavenly scent
  • Relaxing aromatherapy benefits
  • Ideal texture and deeply moisturizing benefits
Ingredients of Note
  • Safflower oil
  • Lavender oil
  • Grapefruit oil
  • Chamomile oil
  • Rose flower oil
  • Squalane
  • Vitamin E

I absolutely love the scent of this aromatic oil—it immediately puts me in a Zen state of mind. Its formulation, which involves base oils of safflower and squalene blended with fragrant and effective oils of lavender, chamomile, grapefruit, and rose, works perfectly to sooth, calm, relax, and brighten. This is one of my favorites to use when my skin feels particularly tight and itchy, and it lives up to its promise to deeply moisturize, reduce irritation, restore the skin barrier, and help skin feel smooth and supple.

Pili Ani Ageless Concentrate ($34 for 15 ml; $62 to 40 ml)
Pili Ani Ageless Concentrate ($34 for 15 ml; $62 to 40 ml)
What We Love
  • Unique ingredients culled from a hearty tree from the Philippines
  • Fabulous mother-and-daughter creation story and powerful support for Filipino farmers
  • Elegant bottle and packaging make for a pretty shelfie
  • Products are fair trade, cruelty free, and vegan
Ingredients of Note
  • Pili oil
  • Elemi oil

Even before I tried this product, I was already in love with its creation story. A mother-daughter duo had experienced the incredible benefits of the hearty pili tree in the Philippines, and they decided to work together to create products concocted from its resilient fruit and sap. The harvesting of the ingredients then benefits more than 200 families in the Bicol region of the country. Turns out, the product as effective as it is socially responsible. The luxurious, lightweight elixir is made from a truly effective blend of pili oil, found in the fruit of the tree, and elemi oil, found in the sap of the tree. Together, they deeply moisturize and protect the skin against environmental pollutants and also provide antibacterial and anti-aging benefits. Plus, beetroot helps increase the skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMFO), further adding to its intense hydrating appeal, something that certainly stood out for my skin.

Rain Organica I am Enough Facial Oil ($34)
What We Love
  • Concocted with love by the founder for a friend undergoing chemo
  • Nourishing ingredients
  • Unscented and suitable for acne-prone skin
Ingredients of Note
  • Argan oil
  • Meadowfoam seed oil
  • Tamanu oil
  • Pumpkin seed oil
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Coenzyme Q10

This oil was created by the brand founder when a friend was undergoing chemo and went into early menopause and needed help treating her skin. As such, it was very thoughtfully created using natural, nourishing ingredients that replenish, fortify, and protect the skin. Also, this oil is interesting because it is most effective when a few drops are added to moisturizer and blended before applying. Though I normally like to slather my face oil directly to my skin, I tried this approach and it, indeed, worked well. It also stands out for being unscented and for containing the antioxidant coenzyme Q10, which can help protect the skin from the effects of UV.

Sea Witch Botanicals Lucidum Reishi Facial Oil ($35)
What We Love
  • Clever name
  • Inclusion of reishi mushrooms, a buzzworthy and effective skincare ingredient
  • Good for protecting skin from post-shave razor burn
  • Eco-friendly packaging—bottles are tinted glass with a dropper made of rubber, glass, and HDPE plastic, and the label is printed with plant-based toner
Ingredients of Note
  • Reishi mushroom
  • Sea buckthorn
  • Nettle
  • Frankincense

I have to be honest—I loved this oil before I tried it because of the clever brand name. But it lived up to my expectations and is a rather magical face oil. This can be credited to its namesake and main ingredient, organic reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum), which is proving to be a rather miraculous ingredient for the skin due to its ability to hydrate, detoxify, and protect. The other ingredients, including sea buckthorn, nettle, and frankincense, further added to its effectiveness and also its enticing scent. The company says it is also ideal for use after shaving to help soothe razor bumps, and my husband tested it out and concurred.
