As the seasons change, so do the allergens in the air—bringing relief for some and misery for others. Whether you’re battling spring pollen or fall ragweed, understanding allergies is the first step to finding relief.
Understanding Allergies
Allergies fall into two main categories: perennial and seasonal.
- Perennial allergies—triggered by dust mites, mold, and pet dander—persist year-round.
- Seasonal allergies—often caused by pollen—flare up in specific seasons, leading to itchy eyes, a scratchy throat, relentless sneezing, and congestion.
Finding Relief: Spring Allergy Testing & Treatment
Pinpointing your triggers is essential for effective allergy management. Allergy testing, including skin-prick and blood tests, helps identify specific allergens so treatment can be tailored to your needs.
“Correctly identifying allergy triggers is a key component of effective management,” says Robert Sporter, M.D., a fellowship-trained allergist/immunologist at ENT and Allergy Associates, LLP (ENTA), the largest ENT, allergy, and audiology practice in the country, with more than 450 clinicians practicing in more than 60 clinical locations throughout New York and New Jersey.
Once allergens are identified, treatment options range from environmental control strategies and medications to immunotherapy, such as allergy shots or sublingual tablets.
Simple Ways to Reduce Spring Allergy Symptoms
According to experts at ENTA, in addition to medical treatments, lifestyle adjustments can help minimize exposure and keep symptoms in check:
- Stay indoors when pollen counts are high.
- Keep windows closed at home, work, and in your car during peak pollen seasons.
- Utilize air conditioning whenever possible.
- Wash hands and face regularly to remove pollen.
- Shower and shampoo before bedtime to wash off accumulated pollen.
- Wear glasses or sunglasses outdoors to reduce pollen exposure to your eyes. Wash bedding weekly using hot water.
Don’t let allergies dictate your season—take control, breathe easier, and enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons with confidence.
