Earth Day (April 22) is around the corner, and as an industry that prides itself on being on the cutting edge of sustainability and planetary responsibility, it’s no surprise that wellness brands have been promoting Earth Month throughout April. Whether it’s sustainable products, giving back to eco-friendly causes, or green travel packages, there’s no shortage of ways to support Mother Earth this season and beyond.
Sustainable Goods
Launching on Earth Day 2022, Codex Beauty is introducing its new certified Carbon Neutral Blue Earth Soap Trio. Made from upcycled soap shavings and featuring biotech skincare solutions, the Earth, Air, and Ocean soaps are designed to preserve both the skin barrier and the planet. The biotech-manufactured ingredients are more concentrated to increase efficacy, and they’re more sustainable, as they don’t require overharvesting of endangered plant species. What’s more, Codex is committed to reaching a zero-carbon footprint by 2025.
Fans of the popular skincare brand Manyo will be excited to hear about the brand’s new Our Vegan Collection. The recent launch is EVE (Expertise Végane Europe) Vegan certified, packaged in FSC packaging, and printed with soy ink. The 100 percent vegan formulated line features a cleanser, toner, serum, cream, sheet mask, lip balm, and aloe gel. The low pH skincare line is suitable for even the most sensitive skin and features heartleaf extract and gotu kola.
One Ocean Beauty is offering 25 percent off its Blue Biotechnology sustainable beauty products for Earth Day this year. Blue Biotechnology allows One Ocean Beauty to use natural molecules obtained through living marine organisms and reproduce them in a lab environment through bio-fermentation. This means no harvesting from the ocean is required, and less waste is generated. The process also reduces land and water usage and preserves the ocean’s biodiversity. The brand also partners with Oceana, the largest global, science-based organization working with governments to change policies and protect the oceans. In 2021, One Ocean Beauty donations saved over 25,000 square miles of deep-sea coral from destructive fishing in New England.
Giving Back
Since 1999, Aveda brands and partners have celebrated Earth Month to raise awareness and funds for clean water. This month, Aveda will donate $5 from every purchase of its limited-edition, 94 percent natural Shampure Nurturing Shampoo Bar to charity: water, a non-profit organization that brings clean and safe drinking water to developing countries. The brand is also hosting the Aveda Earth Month RunWalk through MoveSpring, an app where you can track your steps. For a suggested donation of $20 to charity: water, you can join Aveda’s walking team. To date, the brand has raised $67 million for access to clean water across the globe.
As cannabis continues to be legalized across the country, and the benefits of hemp and CBD are widely preached within the wellness industry and beyond, Blazy Susan has positioned itself as a forward-thinking consumer- focused accessories brand known for supporting its local community. This April, the brand is partnering with One Tree Planted, resulting in one tree being planted for every order placed through blazysusan.com.
Sales from Stasher Bags’ new Ocean Forest collection this April will support SeaTrees, an organization working to restore critical coastal ecosystems like kelp forests and mangroves. Through the partnership, Stasher plans to restore approximately 8,000 square feet of kelp forests in Palos Verdes, CA. The colors of the new bags, which include green, navy, purple, peach, and light blue, are reflective of those found in an underwater forest. In addition, each year Stasher donates 1 percent of all sales to nonprofits working together to protect the planet through its Save What Matters initiative. Since its inception in 2016, Stasher has replaced over a billion single-use plastic bags that would have entered our oceans and landfills.
Eco-Friendly Travel
Guests of The Gabriel properties in Miami and South Beach, FL, should be happy to hear that the two hotels are the first to be named Conscious Certified Hotels, a new ESG (environmental, social, and governance) platform committed to developing hospitality brands with social, health, and environmental consciousness. Qualifications that earned the hotels the title include The Gabriel South Beach’s zero single-use plastic policy, which exceeds the local compliance for the City of Miami Beach, and The Gabriel Miami’s on-site electric-vehicle charging station, among other initiatives. Both locations also offer sustainable transportation options via branded Gabriel bicycles.
Travelers looking to connect with and give back to nature may want to book a stay with Under Canvas. With locations in 10 of America’s most renowned national parks, the luxury camping experience proves you don’t need to sacrifice quality and comfort for sustainability. Under Canvas camps use significantly less water and energy than hotels of similar size due to their pull-chain showers, faucets that automatically shut off, low-flow toilets, and towel-reuse program. In addition, low-level lighting is used throughout camps, mitigating light pollution and amplifying the night sky. The company also partners with local conservation organizations and encourages guests to donate to The Nature Conservancy upon check-in.
Visitors of Sandestin Gold and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, FL, automatically reduce their carbon footprint upon check-in thanks to the resort’s “care-free, car-free” policy. The property’s numerous dining options, resort amenities, and activities are all walkable and bikeable. Nature enthusiasts can take advantage of a variety of hiking trails, kayaking opportunities, paddle boarding, tennis, golf, fishing, and much more. For those more inspired to hit the spa at Hotel Effie Sandestin, Spa Liliana uses only clean and sustainably made products from brands such as Osea and Biologique Recherche, solidifying the brand’s position as an eco-friendly destination.
