How would you like to get fit without emptying your wallet? Setting out on the path to a healthier lifestyle doesn’t need to strain your finances. By employing some simple yet effective strategies, you can achieve your fitness goals while simultaneously cutting down on expenses usually associated with getting fit.

Jason Higgs, senior deals strategist at Bountii, shares his expertise on innovative ways to save money and make the most of your fitness journey.

1. Home Workouts

Home workouts offer convenience and flexibility while allowing you to save serious money by avoiding gym memberships. According to recent data, the average monthly cost for gym memberships globally ranged from $15.91 a month in Canada to $107.38 in Austria. In the U.S., the average cost was $28.58, and in more than half of Europe, it exceeded $40.

These extra monthly fees can definitely add up, so instead, you could work out at home for free. There are a wide variety of free workout videos on platforms like YouTube, or fitness apps that cater to different fitness levels and preferences. “Invest in versatile equipment like resistance bands, which are affordable and can add intensity to your workouts without taking up much space,” says Higgs.

2. Community Resources

Take advantage of community resources and facilities that offer free or low-cost fitness opportunities. Many communities have public parks with outdoor exercise equipment, walking or running trails, and community centers that offer affordable fitness classes or open gym hours. “Explore your local community’s offerings for fitness activities,” says Higgs. “Libraries, community centers, and schools often host free workshops or classes on topics like yoga, tai chi, or dance. It’s a great way to try new activities and meet like-minded individuals while staying within your budget.”

3. Meal Planning and Prep

Meal planning and preparation can help you save money on food expenses by reducing the temptation to eat out or order takeout. Plan your meals for the week, create a grocery list based on affordable, nutrient-dense ingredients, and batch-cook meals in advance to save time and money. “Look for budget-friendly recipes that use simple, wholesome ingredients,” says Higgs. “Websites and cookbooks focused on budget-friendly cooking can provide inspiration for delicious and affordable meals.”

4. DIY Fitness Gear

Making your own fitness gear allows you to customize your workout experience while saving money on expensive equipment. You can create homemade weights using water bottles or canned goods or make your own yoga mat utilizing a towel or blanket. “Get creative with household items to make your workouts more challenging,” says Higgs. “For example, use a sturdy chair for tricep dips or step-ups, or use a broomstick for balance exercises.”

Take control of your health and your finances today, and watch as you lead a healthier, more financially savvy lifestyle that benefits both your body and your bank account.
