We Care Spa (Desert Hot Springs, CA), a popular wellbeing retreat known for its guided fasting and holistic spa treatments, has long been a desert oasis for guests to transform their health. Founder Susana Belen’s embarked on her own journey of transformation during a challenging chapter in her life.

As a divorced mother of four, she faced overwhelming anxiety, fear, anger, and frustration. Through deep study and dedication, Belen discovered practices that empowered her to rebuild her relationship with food and nutrition while reconnecting with her body through yoga and exercise. These life-changing experiences laid the foundation for the We Care Spa methods, a unique approach to wellness rooted in Belen’s personal journey and continued learning.

Belen’s vision was further elevated by her daughter Susan Lombardi, whose background in the fast-paced fashion worlds of Paris and New York gave her a sharp business acumen and a love of hospitality. After a successful modeling career and a melanoma health scare, Lombardi joined her mother’s mission 35 years ago, helping to expand and refine We Care Spa into the inviting wellness retreat it is today.

What began as a modest three-room sanctuary in 1986 has evolved into a welcoming destination with 28 serene rooms, holistic treatments, and the same transformative fasting program that has been at the heart of the spa’s philosophy since its inception. Together, Belen and Lombardi have created an inviting, nurturing escape for guests ready to make a meaningful commitment to their health and wellbeing.

“Our guests count on us to be their safe haven,” says Lombardi, president and owner. “The team at We Care Spa helps so many people to change their lives. Seeing their smiles and feeling their gratitude makes it all worthwhile.”

Here, the We Care Spa team shares eight tips for a healthier new year:

  1. Practice Good Digestion: Honor your food, chew well, and eat on an empty stomach for better digestion.
  2. Trust in Yourself and the Universe: Promote emotional balance and resilience through self-belief.
  3. Avoid Toxins: Use clean beauty products, drink filtered water, and avoid chemicals in your home.
  4. Practice Breathing Exercises: Incorporate 20 minutes per day of deep breathing to support physical and mental health.
  5. Create a Gratitude Practice: Foster a positive mindset and emotional balance with journaling and meditation.
  6. Walk/Exercise Daily: Boost circulation, reduce stress, and support detoxification with daily movement.
  7. Meal Prep for Success: Learn how to organize your kitchen and prepare healthy, fast meals.
  8. Prioritize Sleep: Ensure your body repairs and restores by getting quality sleep.
