Tucked within the forested hills of northeastern Pennsylvania, about two and a half hours from New York City, a quiet corner of the Pocono Mountains has become one of the region’s most immersive wellness destinations. Nestled beside a private lake near the town of Hawley, The Lodge at Woodloch offers something that goes beyond the typical spa weekend.

At first glance, the adults-only retreat looks like many luxury nature resorts: serene views, elegant rooms, and a substantial spa. But spend several days there and it becomes clear that the experience is designed less like a hotel stay and more like a curated wellness retreat. Guests arrive not just to relax but to participate in a schedule of activities, workshops, and outdoor experiences meant to nurture both body and mind.

More recently, the lodge has added a new layer to its programming with a deeper exploration of Ayurveda, the centuries-old system of wellness originating in India. The addition reflects a broader trend among wellness destinations, blending traditional spa offerings with ancient healing philosophies and lifestyle education.

A Wellness Retreat with Structure and Freedom

Unlike many resorts where activities are optional extras, life at The Lodge at Woodloch revolves around a thoughtfully structured daily schedule. Packages include accommodations, three carefully prepared meals each night of the stay, and access to a wide range of classes, workshops, and guided experiences.

The daily activity roster is extensive—often more than 50 options—ranging from group fitness sessions and yoga classes to creative arts workshops, cooking demonstrations and guided outdoor adventures. Guests might begin the morning with meditation or stretching, spend midday learning new culinary techniques, and end the afternoon kayaking or hiking in the surrounding forest.

Yet the atmosphere remains flexible rather than rigid. Some guests fill their schedules from sunrise to evening lectures, while others wander between the spa, a lakeside trail, and a quiet lounge chair with a book. The idea is to provide a framework for personal exploration rather than a strict itinerary.

That balance—structure combined with freedom—is part of the retreat’s enduring appeal.

Nature as the Foundation

The property’s wooded landscape plays a central role in the overall experience. Forest trails wind through the surrounding hills, while the lodge itself overlooks a glistening private lake that mirrors the changing seasons.

Nature-based activities form a core part of the programming. Guided hikes, nature walks, and outdoor adventure excursions invite guests to explore the terrain, while classes focused on nature therapy encourage slowing down and paying attention to the environment.

The philosophy is simple: immersion in natural surroundings can provide a powerful reset from daily routines. Many visitors arrive feeling overwhelmed by work schedules, digital overload, or urban living. A few days among the trees, paired with structured wellness offerings, can help recalibrate those rhythms.

The Spa: A Multi-Level Sanctuary

At the center of the property sits a sprawling spa complex designed as both a treatment facility and a relaxation hub. With 27 treatment rooms, the spa offers a broad menu of bodywork, skincare therapies, and salon services intended to restore physical balance and reduce stress.

The layout encourages lingering. Separate men’s and women’s spa retreats include saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, and quiet lounges with fireplaces. After treatments, guests often drift into co-ed relaxation spaces with names that hint at their purpose: Whisper, a silent sanctuary for deep rest, and Gather, a social lounge for conversation and tea.

The Aqua Garden adds another dimension to the spa environment. Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the surrounding woods while soaking pools feature heated Hydromassage WaterWalls designed to soothe tired muscles. An indoor pool hosts aquatic fitness classes, while an outdoor horizon-edge whirlpool remains open year-round.

More unique elements such as a Himalayan salt sauna, Tyrolean bucket shower, and snow room introduce European-inspired thermal spa traditions not often seen in American resorts.

Fitness, Movement and Mind-Body Practices

For guests seeking an active retreat, the lodge offers extensive fitness facilities and programming. Three dedicated studios host yoga, meditation, aerobics, and mind–body classes throughout the day. A large cardio and weight-training area—spanning roughly 3,000 square feet—includes equipment for strength training, rowing, and Pilates-based workouts.

Specialized spaces for spinning and Pilates towers allow for more focused sessions, while instructors guide both beginner-friendly classes and advanced training options.

Rather than framing fitness purely as exercise, the programming emphasizes movement as part of overall wellbeing. Classes often pair physical training with mindfulness practices, encouraging guests to develop a more holistic relationship with their bodies.

A Culinary Philosophy Rooted in the Land

Food plays an equally central role in the wellness philosophy at The Lodge at Woodloch. Each stay includes three daily meals prepared with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and balanced nutrition.

The culinary centerpiece is TREE Restaurant & Bar, perched among the treetops with glimpses of the nearby lake. The menu focuses on responsibly sourced meats, fresh seafood and organic produce, much of it grown nearby.

A significant portion of the ingredients comes from the property’s own working farm, the Blackmore Farm and Orchard. Located a short walk from the lodge, the farm supplies herbs, vegetables, and honey used in the restaurant’s dishes, cooking demonstrations, and even certain spa treatments.

Visitors can explore the farm grounds and see vegetable gardens, mushroom logs, composting operations, and beehives in action. The site also functions as an educational space, offering gardening workshops that explain sustainable growing methods such as composting, companion planting, and soil health.

For some guests, the most memorable meals happen outdoors. Seasonal harvest lunches and chef-led garden dinners take place right at the farm, turning the traditional farm-to-table concept into something more literal—bringing the table directly to the source.

Derrick Braun, the lodge’s resident “Farm-icist,” describes the deeper philosophy behind the agricultural program with a mix of humor and conviction:

“I guess I always felt like a rebel without a cause, but now things like community building, land restoration, as well as feeding and educating others have replaced my fervor for writing (unanswered) angry comments on company message boards and sore throats from screaming at rallies. Food sovereignty is still my goal, but the garden is now my protest.”

His perspective captures the broader ethos of the farm: nourishing people while restoring the land that sustains them.

What’s New: Ayurveda Arrives in the Poconos

Among the lodge’s more recent developments is the introduction of an immersive Ayurveda experience, expanding the property’s approach to wellness beyond Western spa traditions.

Ayurveda, often translated as “the science of life,” originated in India thousands of years ago and focuses on balancing the body through diet, lifestyle practices, and herbal therapies. At The Lodge at Woodloch, the program introduces guests to core Ayurvedic principles through consultations, treatments, and educational workshops.

Participants may receive guidance on identifying their personal dosha (body type) followed by recommendations for nutrition, daily routines, and stress management techniques aligned with that constitution. Spa therapies inspired by Ayurvedic traditions incorporate specialized oils, massage techniques, and relaxation rituals.

The initiative reflects a growing interest in wellness travel experiences that blend luxury with deeper learning. Rather than offering isolated treatments, the lodge’s Ayurveda program encourages guests to explore how ancient philosophies might fit into modern lifestyles.

A Place to Reset or Reconnect

Though wellness is the guiding theme, the experience at The Lodge at Woodloch can take many forms. Some guests arrive seeking solitude and quiet reflection. Others come with friends or family members for a shared reset away from busy schedules.

Classes and activities often emphasize connection, whether through collaborative workshops, outdoor excursions, or simply gathering around a farm dinner table at sunset.

The result is a retreat environment where people can explore different paths: relaxation, fitness, nature immersion, or personal growth. For many visitors, the appeal lies in having the freedom to choose which direction their stay will take.
