Perched high above the shimmering waters of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, stands the 15-room luxury boutique retreat of Casa Palopó. This intimate wellness hideaway is one of only two Relais & Châteaux properties in the country, a 2025 Michelin Key Award recipient, and a winner of the 2026 Fodor’s Travel Finest Hotels Award.

The property recently unveiled a significant evolution with the opening of Saq’Ya’ Spa, an intimate wellness sanctuary inspired by the ancestral energy, elemental forces, and healing traditions of the Mayans. Here, guests are invited on a deeply personal wellness journey while being enveloped by one of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes and the healing energy of the Guatemalan highlands.

“Like the rest of Casa Palopó, Saq’Ya’ was created to reflect the profound serenity of its setting,” says Claudia Bosch, founder of the local hospitality group GrupoAlta, which owns and manages Casa Palopó and its sister property, Villa Bokéh in Antigua. “Surrounded by volcanic peaks and the tranquil waters of Lake Atitlán, the spa offers an atmosphere where stillness, nature, and cultural tradition come together.”

The Inspiration and Experience

Meaning “blessed water” in the local Mayan language, Kaqchikel, Saq’Ya’ reflects the connection between Lake Atitlán’s natural elements: water, volcanic stone, clay, and fire, as well as the spiritual traditions that have shaped the region for centuries. Designed as a quiet refuge tucked into the hillside of Santa Catarina Palopó, the spa invites guests to pause, reconnect, and restore through rituals rooted in Mayan wisdom and the rhythms of the land. Saq’Ya’ features two private treatment cabins, where therapies are guided by experienced spa consultants and incorporate local herbs, sacred aromas, and natural elements sourced from the surrounding highlands.

The Therapies and Treatments

Each Saq’Ya’ experience is designed as a ritual rather than a simple treatment, drawing inspiration from the sacred forces of Lake Atitlán and Mayan cosmology. Guests begin their wellness journey with a symbolic ceremony in the spa’s caracol energético, a sacred spiral space designed to center the body and mind before treatments unfold through touch, breath, and ancestral rhythms.

Among the most distinctive experiences is the Tz’i’bal – Medicina de la Tierra, a hot herbal compress massage infused with ceremonial herbs that deliver warmth, aroma, and healing energy deep into the muscles

Other signature therapies include:

  • Kak’a Sakar | The Dawn Massage – A gentle relaxation ritual inspired by the first light rising over Lake Atitlán, designed to calm the nervous system and restore balance.
  • Chuk’a Balam | Strength Massage – A deep tissue therapy using intentional pressure to release tension and awaken the body’s inner power.
  • Nawal | Vital Energy Ritual – An integrative treatment blending aromatherapy, acupressure, stretching, and energy work to align body, mind, and spirit.
  • Ixkanul | Calm Fire Massage – A hot obsidian stone ritual that channels volcanic heat to dissolve muscular tension and restore energy flow.

With only a handful of daily appointments available, Saq’Ya’ continues Casa Palopó’s philosophy of intimate, highly personalized hospitality, ensuring that each guest experiences wellness not as a routine treatment, but as a meaningful journey of renewal.
