After a successful career in nutrition, epidemiology, and healthcare law, Kat Burki founded Kat Burki skincare, a line formulated with proven global healing modalities. Burki brought 20 years of education and research in nutrition and disease management to the creation of the efficacious beauty products. When she couldn’t find products that focused on the whole nutrition needed to heal the skin, Burki set out to create her own. Relying on the principles of nutritional biochemistry, the line was created to deliver the nutrition skin needs. Here, she shares the role nutrition plays in her own wellness journey.
What does wellness mean to you?
Finding the best options to improve your state of being in every element of your life.
What are your favorite things to do to maintain your personal wellbeing?
Being outdoors as much as I possibly can. I like the windows open. I try to sleep well and make sure my food choices are as nutrient dense as possible.
Is there a specific fitness activity that you love and why?
Pilates, because it centers me. It’s not just about exercise, it also centers the mind and body and puts visuals in my head that carry me through the day.
What is your favorite healthy food, and do you have a favorite way of preparing it?
My favorite way of eating is vegetarian and preparing it in my own kitchen.
What is your favorite healthy beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), and do you have any insider tips for preparing it?
Lemon water. My only tip is to always start your day with it before you eat because it’s best for optimizing digestion.
What person in wellness do you most admire and why?
My mom because she was ahead of the curve in understanding the importance of nutrition in health. She questioned the status quo and taught me to do the same.
What do you think is the most exciting wellness innovation you have recently discovered?
Infrared is extremely helpful for so many inflammatory conditions.
What is your favorite self-care routine?
Setting morning intentions and goals for the day; having lemon water to start my morning; performing my AM skincare routine; enjoying a smoothie; doing Pilates; being outside in nature to plant, garden, and journal; and having a blanched meal of protein and nutrient-dense foods.
What is your go-to for de-stressing?
I create a to-do list and unplug.
What aspect of your wellbeing do you struggle with the most, or would most like to improve?
Unplugging
How do you celebrate small victories?
Spending time with friends and family
What brings you joy?
My children, friends, family, and two dogs bring me so much joy. I also love art, decorating my home, and antiquing—I can just get lost in it. And being able to laugh. Even work brings me joy!
