With most of the world operating at a breakneck speed and burnout at an all-time high, it’s no surprise we need a day devoted to rest and relaxation. Celebrated annually, National Relaxation Day, which falls on August 15, was the brainchild of Michigan-based Sean Moeller, who thought of the idea in 1985, when he was just nine years old. Promoting the idea of stress relief through meditation and other techniques, the day is essentially meant to encourage people to chill out.
Here, the medical experts at Strata Integrated Wellness and Spa at Garden of the Gods Resort and Club (Colorado Springs, CO) share their relaxation tips for celebrating the day and beyond.
Tip #1: Take Time to Breathe
Let yourself pause for a moment. Sit comfortably with your eyes closed and take 10 slow, deep belly breaths—even just a few rounds of mindful deep breathing can support your entire body in softening and switching into a more relaxed nervous system state.
Tip #2: Make a Chill List
Brainstorm the activities and things in your life that help you relax and ultimately rejuvenate your spirit. Examples may include taking a bubble bath; spending time in nature; enjoying a cup of soothing tea; experiencing a massage; spending time with friends, family, and pets; reading a book; or planning a date night.
Tip #3: Simply Cuddle
Research has found that cuddling for just 30 minutes can decrease stress and lower blood pressure—so start to prioritize cuddles more often.
Tip #4: Trade Scalp Massages
With thousands of nerve endings present in the scalp, even a couple minutes of a scalp massage can help your whole body relax and forget the stressors that distract us in life. Add soothing music, nature sounds, or binaural beats for an additive benefit.
Tip #5: Clear the Clutter (from your calendar)
Look ahead at your week—or even the entire month—and make a point to cut a few things out of your schedule that feel overwhelming. Give yourself permission to pencil in more time for self-care and to say no to unnecessary tasks and obligations.
