We all love our coffee—it’s the go-to drink for waking up and staying focused. But, as with most good things, too much coffee can lead to some strange and worrying health issues. The coffee experts at Cafelista have revealed some of the more unusual problems that can come from drinking too much coffee:

  1. Hallucinations: Believe it or not, drinking a lot of coffee can sometimes make you hear things that aren’t there. A study by Durham University shows that downing more than seven cups a day can increase the chances of experiencing hallucinations. This happens because caffeine ramps up your body’s stress response.
  2. Increased Heart Rate: Coffee gives your heart a little boost, but too much can send it into overdrive. Drinking too much can cause tachycardia, a term for a very fast heart rate. This can be risky, especially if you have heart issues.
  3. Weaker Bones: Over time, drinking too much coffee can mess with your body’s ability to absorb calcium, leading to weaker bones and a higher chance of fractures.
  4. Stomach Problems: Coffee is acidic, and too much can irritate your stomach. This can lead to acid reflux, gastritis, and even IBS. The high acidity of coffee can irritate the stomach lining, leading to discomfort and long-term gastrointestinal problems.
  5. Sleep Issues: We all know coffee helps us stay awake, but drinking too much can seriously mess up your sleep. Too much caffeine can cause insomnia, making it hard to get a good night’s rest.

If you feel like your coffee intake may be a bit too here, here are some tips to avoid coffee’s negative effects:

  • Set a Daily Limit: Try to stick to three to four cups a day maximum. This amount is generally safe and lets you enjoy the benefits without the downsides.
  • Go for Decaf: If you love the taste of coffee but want to cut down on caffeine, decaf is a great option. You get the flavor without the buzz.
  • Stay Hydrated: Coffee can dehydrate you, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to balance things out.
  • Choose Quality Over Quantity: Invest in good coffee beans, and savor each cup. This way, you’ll be less tempted to drink multiple cups of lower-quality coffee.
  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel after drinking coffee. If you’re getting jittery, anxious, or having stomach issues, it might be time to cut back.
  • Watch Your Timing: Try to avoid drinking coffee late in the afternoon or evening, as this can mess with your sleep. Aim to have your last cup at least six hours before bedtime.
  • Healthy Habits: Boost your energy in other ways too – regular exercise, eating well, and getting enough sleep can all help keep you alert and awake.

By keeping an eye on how much coffee you drink and making a few small changes, you can enjoy your favorite drink without the strange side effects.

Coffee doesn’t only provide a boost of energy, but it also serves as a catalyst for socializing and connecting with others,” says a spokesperson for Cafelista.“Whether it’s catching up with friends over a cup of coffee or going for a coffee run during work, coffee has the power to help bring people together.”
